Johannisborg Castle was built in 1613 as a as a residence for Duke Johan of Östergötland, Johan III's son, as a guardian of the city of Norrköping and was not completed until several years after the Duke's death in 1618.
The castle originally consisted of two buildings connected by wings. It was provided with six towers and surrounded by tombs and ramparts which together formed a five-pointed star. The castle had three floors and six spiers.
The castle was burned in 1719 by the Russians and the remaining remains of walls were demolished in 1720. Only parts of the gate tower were left.
The gate tower was rebuilt during a restoration in 1934. It is built of plastered gray-beige whitewashed brick.
