Visit duration    1 hour

This was a location sent to me by my one local friend who’s into urbex. Occasionally we trade finds or if he sees something that is buttoned up, he tells me about it. I make it open, and he later visits it when his busy schedule allows for it.
This was a late in the day excursion and it was snowing. I had just explored old camp grounds which had a ton of graffiti and damage. The pool was filled with dirt and covered with snow. I didn’t take any pictures that were worth a crap so I proceeded to head to the city where the jail was.

I parked in a lot right next to it and mozied over with my tools in hand. As I studied the outside I noticed a basement window was opened, but partially covered by a heavy, rusty metal grate. I couldn’t lift it. However, there was just enough space between its edge and the building that I could squeeze through carefully.

Once my feet hit the level below where the window was, I reached above the grating for my purse. The cellar was black. I heard rustling noises and hurried steps. My first instinct was to suspect other urbex folks-not knowing how popular or unpopular of a destination it was. I said hello multiple times and the lack of response revealed it was merely a critter. I turned on my flashlight and lowered myself in stepping on a large pipe before hitting the floor.

The first thing I noticed was a giant boiler which had to have dated back a hundred years. I couldn’t find the precise date on it I had just seen enough boilers in my explores to know what long time antiques look like. When I found the stairs and made my way up, all I saw was small rooms with doors that had windows. Paint was curling from the walls and there were parts of the structure that could collapse at moment. Holes in the floors and ceilings proved this to be a possibility.

Finally I saw two doors that looked to be more like cell doors; that had small windows and were metal. I’m familiar with the architecture of jails/prison for unsaid reasons. When I went in there were small rows of barred cells with just a metal bed and toilet seat. All of the black paint on the bars was flaking off exposing the rusty metal underneath. Metal scraps and trash was strewn at the corners of the hallways. Some cells were open but particular difficult
To photograph with just a flashlight as a source of light. I managed to angle it well
Enough to get a couple decent hallway pics. My conclusion of the structure is that it was in fact a jail, but al of the little room that had windows makes me wonder if perhaps it also housed the inmates before releasing them into the public once their parole was cleared. Nowadays, I do not have many friends still living seedy lifestyles but part of
Me wonders if I could get the low down about this jail from some of my older ex-druggie acquaintances. Even though it was so dark, it was also evening, snowing, and I’m sure a photographer with a better light could at least take one or two snaps that capture its essence.
