Once upon a time, in the distant Soviet times, echelons with prisoners went to Latvia. They were dropped off at the Shkirotava station and, under the barking of dogs, they were led in formation for about a kilometer in order to lead them through the prison gates and distribute them to their cells. Then in the Shkirotava prison there were about 2,500 people at the same time. They lived in overcrowded barracks, which are now not on the territory of the institution. And there are two buildings. The cells, although it would be wrong to call large rooms that way, are designed for 70 prisoners.
Shkirotava Prison has a partially closed status. Those who received a term of up to five years in prison were serving their sentences here. But not only. Those who were serving sentences for murders also came to this institution - in the event that they had already served most of their term in a closed prison and had no violations of discipline. Prisoners also meet with relatives - depending on the level of the regime and behavior, from two to 48 hours four times a year, and those at the highest level are allowed visits.
