I made a separate ig account intended for writing, but since the authors community is a hurting-ass-loop, I decided to combine imagery with words. Sometimes I include a poem or story in the caption. In the case of this photo, that’s what I did. I wrote a small report reflecting my experience at the condemned cathedral:
I had been staking out this particular church for months. On a bitterly cold day, when most people were inside binge watching Netflix, I parked nearby. Heat cranked, gazing at the red brick church until it was clear out front and the traffic thinned. People had told me “it’s pinned up good now. You can’t get in.” I learned to trust no one and heed gut instinct. In doing so, I have both reaped the rewards or faced unfavorable consequences. This was a lucky explore that transcended my expectations. From the outside it was a typical looking nineteenth century cathedral. Inside, I was over stimulated by it’s architectural aesthetic: Pitched and stained glass windows. Rays of light accented the intricate mill work. Both tiers lined with rows of hand carved seats. They all formed a giant horse shoe around the empty alter. Rat and pigeon shit was encrusted over every seat. Paint flaked from the walls, peppering the hardwoods like snow. From a distance, all of its features glowed.

I’m calling it the link church because when I entered the lower level, that’s the first thing I noticed; it’s brightly pink painted, flaking walls. Also a life sized nativity set and many religious figurines in a cluster either on stage or below it in random positions.

I can’t take credit for finding this particular location. It was shared with me by a more generous urbexer, when I was running low on personal finds. It was VERY posted in a private fb group. Around the time that those particular urbex folks entered, either the side door or a basement window in the back ally have them access. Since their visits it became more buttoned up. The side doors was chained from the inside, all the doors locked and chained inside. It also happens to reside the corner of two very main roads in a highly populated mill town.

Here’s the it only; I never considered the side of the church facing one of the main streets that had an iron fence outside of it. I got an observe of Adrenalin when I went in successfully and said “fuck it,” and hopped the iron fence. I fiddled with the windows. One propped but would slide all the way up. The second one I worked on slid up with zero effort so I hoisted myself onto my elbows in plain view of the street, and rolled in.

When I first entered, eyeful of the stained glass and decaying pink walls, my heart reverberated with sheer anxiety. I was alone, and I made a very public trespass. It subsided as soon as I began snapping pictures all the way up to the actual church which was astounding. I was floored by its detail and historic design. Most of the walls were orange, with peeling paint, the seating was covered in dust and pigeon shit...but in the pictures I took, the signs of abandonment, are very minimal because the structure is so vast. I attempted to capture it in different angles that I haven’t seen previously posted. There were so many unique features, it was difficult to choose which I preferred. I detest over posting the same location...esp since I’m on a roll at the moment finding my own locations.

When i left the building the front push doors, opened right up. They lock from the inside, but I was fortunate to not have to make the same highly obvious exit. I left a couple tools behind by the entrance but didn’t hassle to go back for them because it was just so worth it. Possibly my favorite explore next to the gutted cathedral I wrote about, “red brick landmark,” I think was my chosen title.

For a long time, the two or three online urbexers who I’m friends with were constantly affirming how impossible it was to get into. The main streets both sides. The ally with doors chained from the inside. Two by fours holding any of the more private entrances securely in place. To think, all I had to do, was hop the iron fence on the main road. I would have seen it much sooner, had I considered it. Better late than never.
