When the war in Europe broke out in 1939, Sweden was facing a situation where a lot of ammunition needed to be produced in a short time. Sweden could not produce gunpowder in sufficient quantities, which is why war production became necessary. The plant was built in collaboration with Hellefors mill, which, among other things, supplied the plant with labor. Cotton powder was mainly produced. The site was chosen because of its strategic location, far inland, but still with good connections, thanks to the railway (station in Neva), and road system of good quality.
The factory was built in two parts, with an above-ground part and a rock-laid part. The factory produced gunpowder throughout the war, and production ceased on the same day as the war ended.
The methods used were relatively primitive, and were suitable for mass production during wartime, but not for peaceful production. The plant was therefore not further developed. Instead, the technology was developed in a different, more rational place. However, the plant remained for reserve production until 1973. The site has gradually fallen into disrepair, but some still exist today.
