In 1882, 36 fortifications were designed to be built around Bucharest in order to defend the city from the numerous enemies that the country had at the time. 18 big forts and 18 defense points were built in the following period, from 1885 to 1899. However, none were ever used in the following years for their intended purpose. Some were destroyed intentionally or by accident, some were simply left to decay, while others were used as storage for the military or private companies. One of them even functioned as one of the most notorious prisons in Romania, and can be visited today in organized official tours. The Leurdeni Fort presented in this report is among the best preserved, but can still hide traps, so beware.
