The Big Move

To visit this place is to see history in the making, a ghost town that is being demolished in front of our eyes.

The place is called “Ore Rock” or ”Ore Mountain” because of the iron mine close by. The community has existed since the 1700th century and has been moved around several times, to make room for the growing mine. Now it’s being torn down for good. The people living there are being offered new homes in the town close by. Some houses that have a historic value are being moved to another area, where they are safe from the risk of collapse of the ground.

The iron ore was probably found in 1690 and in 1735 the first test mining was done. The mine has been owned by several companies, but it became big in 1888 when they were able to ship the ore by train from the mine for the first time. The first railway line is gone, but it was situated where the Sports hall, bus station and high school is situated now (se photos).

The first years, the mine workers lived in wooden huts that were nailed together by discarded dynamite boxes. Later several small villages were built in the area, many of them had to be abandoned when the mine grew. These places are already torn down.

In 2016 the total of 6 135 people lived here. Right now, the city is being emptied of residents to complete the demolition of the whole town. Something similar is happening in a neighbouring town further north 12,5 kilometers away.

Although the move is criticized it is necessary for the mine to survive and give work to the inhabitants living in the area.
