Canfranc International Railway Station formally opened in 1928. The main building is 240 metres (790 ft) long and has 365 windows (one for each day of the year) and 156 doors. It was opened in the presence of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and the president of the French Republic Gaston Doumergue. Its large size (it was the second largest in Europe) gave it the nickname the "Titanic of the Mountains".

On 20 March 1970 a train derailed on the French part of the railway and demolished the L'Estanguet bridge on the French side of the Pyrénées Mountains. In the summer of 2020 it shall be restored.
