Endless dark hallways behind concealed windows by StarkUrbex_ on June 17 2021 10:27 hr CE(S)TShortlink to this report: [ https://urbx.be/hgmu ]

Another sanatorium. But there could never be too many in my taste!
Here you find endless dark hallways. Dark, because the windows are concealed with steel screens. The entrance is through the cellar or through a window approx. 2 meters up (easy). The building is well sealed because of the covered windows, so make sure you know how to get out quick if you need to. Otherwise, there are many places to hide. :)
The most famous spot is the big entrance hall/assembly hall in the middle of the building. Here you can find a 6+ meters vaulted ceiling with beautiful pillars in Italian Renaissance style.
There are almost no bad graffiti here, and the famous Plotbot KEN has made a beautiful painting in one of the staircases.
I loved this place, although I didn't stay for long (1 hour). It was creepy not to have many options how to get out and it was quite dark. This place is so perfect for amazing photos though so I would love to go again.
Behind this massive building there is another big abandoned high-rise building. It's much newer and I have heard there are people squatting there. My source said it wasn't worth a visit, but I will check it out next time (of course I will not disturb those who call it their home).
Some history …
This hospital was finished in 1903 and was one of the biggest ones of its kind in the 1930’s (in Europe). It could then hold about 150 patients. The facility is T-shaped and has three wings. It was a hospital for men with tuberculosis. Later it became, like many other hospitals, a military hospital in 1942. I have read (not confirmed) that the tuberculosis patients were murdered by the Nazis to make room for the injured soldiers.
After the war the building was used as an orthopedic hospital together with four other buildings in the area (I think the newer building I talked about before was included in the hospital then). In 1963 the hospital had the capacity for 3 700 patients.
After the wall fell the hospital fell in despair until today. (It was closed in 1992). The building is well protected though, and it seems like it still could be saved. There might be plans to make the house into 500 luxury apartments.
What to bring:
Headlight (essential)
Gloves (for climbing)
Camera with a flash
Warning:
Only a couple of ways how to get in and out.
Well protected by guards (they wont get into the building though).
