***Before I write this report, you must know that you need full permission in order to enter these buildings. They are all heavily locked up and cops patrol the grounds every hour.

Medfield State Hospital was originated in 1892. The buildings architectural style is Queen Anne & Greek Revival. Medfield State Hospital was originally an asylum that housed 50 patients per building; and there were a total of 58 buildings on the 650 acre grounds. The hospital raised it's own chickens, pigs & cows. They also had fruit trees in the front of the property, and wheat & grain fields on either side of the grounds. Medfield strictly focused on the wellbeing of it's patients who suffered with mental illness by letting them work the grounds. The patients did things like tend to the livestock, butcher the meat they raised, harvest the crops, build the pathways, clean the buildings, and much more. The doctors, super intendent and nurses strongly endorsed these activities to help the patients with normal lifestyles. The patients relied on these jobs, as they made them feel better and happier. Unfortunately in 1958, Kennedy passed a law which ruined all of these jobs for the patients in the hospitals. The law insisted on paying patients who did any form of labor, chores, or work rather than allowing them to do it for free. Patients then were "let go" of their small jobs that they grew a custom to, and had to sit inside and look out the windows all day. Not too shortly after, Thorazine was introduced to the patients. They were now heavily sedated and medicated, to help treat their mental illnesses'. This made a huge negative impact on the patients, and one of them actually hung himself because he lost his job of 30 years working the elevators. These patients became so in love with these jobs, and they were taken away so quickly, and the state didn't think much of how this will effect them.
Later on, the lobotomy was introduced. This hospital had 2 buildings for the criminally insane. One on the left side of the grounds which housed men, and one on the right side of the grounds which held the women. These people were a danger to anyone who would come near them. In the hospitals, they had holding cells with tiny windows that housed the worst of the worst. These are the kind of patients who will rip your eyes out, or try and kill you the second they see you. These were the people who would receive the lobotomies. Everyone in the outside world thought that just any person who was mentally ill received these procedures. That was not the case. The nurses and doctors who would come in contact with these dangerous patients after the procedure said that they no longer feel in danger with these patients. These people who would be locked up in seclusion rooms 23 hours a day, and couldn't go outside, socialize, or even go to the cafeteria; were now sane. They were now able to go out to the cafeteria and get food, and attend day programs. People say that lobotomies were inhumane, but would you rather have someone who would kill you the second they can get their hands on you? or would you rather them be sane, and actually be able to try and live out the rest of their lives as sane people? Medfield State Hospital was not a bad hospital by any means. They actually stayed open until 2003. The layout of the hospital was all male wards were to the left, all female wards were to the right, and all entertainment was in the center. This hospital had 4 infirmaries, 3 cafeterias, 2 wards; one for male & one for female who had epilepsy, a cathedral, a male workshop, and a female dress shop where they made dresses. In the late 60's, the hospital built a large 4 story hospital in the front of the property to cure the patients who were ill. They knocked that building down because it never went with any of the other buildings, and they had stopped using it. Each building was built a certain distance apart from one another so they always had sunlight inside the buildings. The hospital's buildings were built on top of a hill over looking a beautiful river in the back, and 100+ miles of Massachusetts in the front. Now, the grounds of Medfield State Hospital are open to the public, but the buildings are not. Medfield is also known for its famous history, where the movies Shutter Island, The New Mutants, and The Box were filmed. Majority of the buildings are still standing, and they plan to renovate some for future businesses.
