Visit duration    3 hours

Built in the late eighteenth as a grand mansion for a wealthy landlord, it occupies a stunning rural location overlooking the Shannon estuary. This mansion was bought by the church, extended and ran as a seminary before soon being taken over by an order of nuns and became a convent. The nuns ran a girls boarding school and huge extensions were added in the 1960s and 70s, but closed its doors in the late 90s.
The site must be approached from the old entrance gate further south as the other further north leads through an active farmyard. Only access to the Manor was through a fire escape, all other ground floor entrances had been recently secured as of August 2019. But this was was worth it, as the beautiful untouched interior was revealed. No apparent graffiti or vandalism, and loads of furniture and fittings still left. Really interesting decorated rooms and basement. Unfortunately we could not gain access to the 1960s school buildings out back, but my guesses are they would not live up to any standards seen in the Georgian building. Be aware the location is active with farming, as we were almost caught on the way out.
