Schiff Dr.Ingrid Wengler

This passenger ship of 41 meters lay half sunken in the river in the middle of town. She was built in 1959 and bought by van de Lücht in 1975. The former cargo ship was rebuilt as a luxurious passenger ship.

After the reunion of Germany, the waters were open again. Partically interesting was to cruise the waters of Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. The route was described as they “resembled an expedition to an unknown country.” The cruise was very popular in the beginning and the boat offered a high level of comfort.

Soon there was other things that stood in the way for the cruising company. Broken locks in the cabin doors, strikes and bureaucracy made the ship cancel their journey or turn back during the cruises. It ended with van de Lücht having to pay back the money to the passengers and soon the company was bankrupted.

The boat was now a property of the bank. The former owner still lived on the boat which anchored on the southern tip of an island. In 1996 authorities decided the boat was blocking a landing dock and forced it to move. The ship was not made ready for the winter and without electricity and water connected, the pipes froze and burst. The owner tried to sue the shipping authorities but lost.

By this time the ship was visited by many uninvited “guests” that broke or stole the interior, and the ship soon became a wreck.

The ship has now been anchored in the same place for over 20 years. There are some people who wants to save the ship and renovate her to her former state. But the shipping authorities require the owner van de Lücht's power of attorney for this. He made a clear statement to the Berliner Zeitung: “The WSA won't get them”.

She might be rescued and put in a museum harbour, but the question is if it hasn’t been too long already and she will soon go down.

For urbexers she is a famous landmark that many have seen – a few have even been on board. But soon she might just be a memory.
