Originally built as a sea fortress in 1828 (completed in 1840). In 1867 it functioned as a military barracks and then from 1919 it served as a prison until it closed around 2002/2004? Normally up to 2000 prisoners were detained here but there were twice as many at times. Many people were executed
here and apparently psychic experiments were carried out on inmates during the soviet era.
Soon to be opened as a museum but well worth a visit. Very grim!
