While on a canoe trip in The Gambia, we stumbled upon an abandoned vacation park tucked away along the river. The park, once a promising destination for travelers, now sits in a state of quiet decay, overtaken by nature and the passage of time. The tropical environment, coupled with the crumbling structures, offered an eerie yet beautiful glimpse into a past that no longer exists. The vacation park, which appears to have been built to cater to tourists seeking a tropical retreat, is now deserted. From what we gathered, the park likely closed due to the economic downturn in the region, leaving it in a state of abandonment. The surrounding area, with its lush vegetation and tropical beauty, provides a stark contrast to the dilapidated buildings scattered throughout.
The small, quaint bungalows were once designed to house vacationing families and couples. Now, many of them are slowly being reclaimed by nature, with vines creeping up their walls and roofs.
Interestingly, we discovered a homeless family living in one of the bungalows. They had taken shelter in one of the more intact structures, making it clear that the park was no longer just a place for tourists, but also a refuge for those in need. Out of respect for their privacy and safety, we did not approach or disturb them. It’s heartbreaking to see that a place that once promised relaxation and escape has now become a refuge for people who have no other options.
