Nice not to encounter fences and / or signs for a change. You can drive there, park and walk in. And we were not alone, because there were still 4 cars. From the outside Sanatorium du Basil is really a picture, a 10. Inside you have to search hard and really walk the necessary kilometers, but even then you will certainly get a 6. But most of it is really completely demolished. We climbed 2 improvised stairs to get to the attic and have a look at the tower.

We were there with quite a large group. The terrain has been completely fenced off and at multiple locations cameraposts are installed. The cameras start beeping and flashing when they spot your movement. A small group of other people was walking around as well. The fence was lifted from the concrete at a point and we went inside for a short time. Inside the cameras might beep when they spot you through the windows. In the building itself we did not encounter camera's at all. Whether security is connected to them and alarmed, no idea. We haven't seen security, but there is quite a chance that somewhere an alarm went off and some security might have come to check out.
The building however is not very interesting anymore. It's completely stripped down to a concrete skeleton on the inside. The outside looks pretty okay and is still somewhat nice. It is on a very nice location in the woods though.

Been here today, very beautiful place. The place is currently being Renovated! So if you want to see it in "abandoned condition", you'll have to be fast.
The entire third floor is stripped and ready for renovation, the first and second floor is still full of vandalized rooms.
A beautiful and big building that would normally be a treasure for urbexers, but since it is being renovated its not the "haunted" place it used to be.

It was one of the very few sunny days of the rainy belgian summer of 21. The ideal day to visit this urbex legend. The location was easy to find. But on arriving we weren't quite sure if we were in the correct place. The street looked like a private driveway. There is a big sign that reads that only visitors of the hospital are allowed. It is indeed the road to a retirement home. A quick look on google maps learned us that the sanatorium is behind the retirement home and that it is the only road to reach the place. So we took our chances. We parked our car on the parking lot and went further by foot. A few meters behind the home is a barrier and another sign that reads private property. A quick glance to see if anyone is looking, and we crawled under it. After a short walk we reached the sanatorium. It was like entering an postapocalyptic era. The building is huge. First we walked a tour around the building. There is a lot of vandalism, but you can still see how glorious it once must have been. It was very easy to find an enterance, because all the doors and windows are smashed. Inside, the vandalism is even worse... I don't understand why people amuse themselves with trashing such places. It is very sad to see. But despite all that, still worth a visit. If the place is still on your bucket list, than you don't have to wait very long. Last week the place was sold, it will be renovated into a big touristic complex.

This is one of the most iconic urbex locations in Belgium. This site was also my first real urbex experience. Despite the fact that this location is completely trashed, it remains a top location! easy access, hours of exploration, the roof is also easy accessible...
The building itself is a real gem. A unique geometry and a unique story behind this location. A gigantic madhouse. There is a lot of vandalism but if you look closely you can see some very nice grafitti here and there.
This location is guaranteed to give you great pictures when you go home.

This place is listed on google, very easy to find. the building is beautiful, so despite the major trashy -ness of it, we decided to pay it a visit. You can just park your car at this still operational hospital a bit down the road and walk up the hill. This seems to be in general a quite famous destination for walkers and hikers, we saw a lot of them... or was it urbexers in disguise? Who knows :)
For the rest it is your typical abandoned healthcare facility, lots of trashy graffiti, not a single window intact, trash everywhere.
Nevertheless, you can get some good shots from various angles inside and outside, and a nice chill walking through the rooms. And you dont have to fear to get shooed out. If you expect the theatrical value of shutter island and co. you are up for disappointment though.

This is an urbex classic.
A beautiful place to begin an urbex adventure.
The whole building is intact but the interior is indeed demolished by vandals and time.
Great place to climb the roof and enjoy the stunning view of the valley in front of the sanatorium.
Definitely a must go before something happens to it!

This was my first visit to this location. Despite the poor condition of the buildings and many traces of vandalism, I still find this place very much worth the visit. It is still an impressive building, beautiful architecture and surrounding nature. Aside from vandalism and theft there is also natural decay to be found.
Be sure to bring a flashlight. The cellar and places that require lighting are the most untouched by vandalism.
There were at least 20-30 other people here during my visit. Their presence didn't bother me though. All were friendly and I actually found them a bit comforting since I was there on my own.
FYI: There seems to be recent ANPR (numberplate recognition) camera on the parking on the road to this location, and also a recently put up barrier and "Private/no entry" signs.

This place felt like a must to visit. You could still see where it's beauty once laid. Now its a trashed up place where even family's go with their kids. There isnt anything of substance to see in the many many rooms. All there is, is vandalism, trash, and overal decay.
I wouldnt have wanted to miss it, but its not a notable location (anymore). I forgot to bring my camera and honestly, I didnt miss it. It was fun, but thats about it. There was a whole lot of other people, including whole groups of up to 10 people.

Was even zoek hoe we het best konden aanlopen.

i battle (like many) with depression with many ups and downs.
Sanatorium Du basil is one of the first real urbex locations i went to.
when i drove up to sanatorium du basil i was so impressed, a huge curved building with large boulders instead of bricks finished with a bell tower in the middle it was so impressive.
i got to the top floor of du basil and i look out the window over the mountains and the woods from where the mist hung over the trees this literally took my breath away.
that was the turning point of my life now urbex is my distraction as soon as i feel down i just go urbexing and is that not a option than i start reorganizing my locations.

My first time urbex..
Sanatorium du Basil was the first spot I visited. And I liked exploring it. The building was totaly trashed: broken windows, garbage, stolen copper and eqcuipment, graffiti,..
But still, this building has a lot to offer.
There's still a story that can be told. You just have to look for it.
When we arrived we took the front to look at it. Entering is easy. Almost every door, window is smashed or wide open.
The building at the back has a more dark view, and more creepy vibe.

Locatie 4/4
SANATORIUM PROVINCIAL de B* pour les Hommes
SANATORIUM du Basil
gebouwd omstreeks 1900
verlaten sinds 2013
te koop voor €3.000.000
GESCHIEDENIS
Gelukkig of helaas...???... Oog van de betrachter...
SANATORIUM PROVINCIAL de B* pour les Hommes
SANATORIUM du Basil
built around 1900
abandoned since 2013
for sale for € 3,000,000
HISTORY
This imposing building is located in the Ardennes
The sanatorium is also known as "Sanatorium du Basil".
The initiative for building a sanatorium came in 1899 from the director of the Bacteriological Laboratory, Ernest Malvoz.
Construction started around 1900 and the first patients were received in 1903.
The location on a hill in the middle of a wooded area was not chosen randomly.
Due to the clean air and soothing environment, makes it a favorable environment for the tuberculosis patients to recover.
The south-facing main building was designed in such a way that due to its curved shape, one could take full advantage of the sunlight.
This had a positive effect on the treatment.
The main building is set up symmetrically, with a tower and clock at its center. In the west was the medical department. The canteen and kitchen were located on the first floor at the backsite of the building. The laundry and boiler room were located on the ground floor with a brick chimney.
After serving as a sanatorium for the time, the building became a psychiatric institution.
From 2010 to 2013 it became an asylum seekers' center. After this, the building was closed due to high maintenance costs. Since that time, the complex has been for sale for € 3.000.000,-
PRESENT DAY
The whole complex is in terrible condition. This is mainly due to Vandalism.
Research into the history and data clearly showed the decline; from 2008, photos from the outside as well as from the inside, the vandalism is clearly visible.
After 2013, things went down very quickly. Photos on sites from 2017-2018 still showed furniture and doors in rooms. As also a partially existing kitchen with appliances ...
I keep finding it incomprehensible what the fun is to wreak havoc ... A shame and NOT DONE ...
MY OPINION
A sparkling building, you can recognize the classic architectural style of 1900.
I found and posted photos from around 1903 - 1960 on the internet.
I think the grand staircase is very beautiful ... Which is no longer exists, unfortunately.
What I still wonder; why owners of such beautiful location, do not take advantage of people's curiosity and open it up for a fee ...
For example:
Partly turning it into a museum, partly an exhibition space with history and equipment from that time, or current themes, workshops, etc ...
It creates employment and earns money for maintenance.
In addition, one can set up a foundation for donations to support the building whenever there is a shortage of money for maintenance ....
But yes, I've wrote it before ... I'm not a politician. Happy or unfortunately ... ??? ... Eye of the betrayer ...

GESCHICHTE
??? ... Auge des Betrachters...

One of the very few sanatoriums we ever visited. Actually the best location for people who recently started urbexing. No sexurity or fence.
Which might actually be the reason for so many people visiting. We actually ran into 5 other groups🖐
Can just recommend it!

Waarom laat men in ons land zulke mooie gebouwen verloren gaan?
Mysterious.
On a sunny day we visited this easily accessible location. We decided to park in a parking lot a few hundred meters from the location. Some, however, drive to the grass in front of the buildings. Something we find quite disrespectful.
The first thing I noticed was that it is a larger location. I can imagine some staying here for hours. So best to allow enough time in advance. In case you wish to visit multiple locations on the same day.
There was a lot of construction waste in front of the buildings. Also waste from vandalism. Apparently, efforts have been made to renovate the location. The new stickers were even hanging on some windows.
A lot of vandalism has been committed in the small associated buildings. All rooms in the main building have been gutted. Numerous grafitti adorn the walls. We suspect rituals have been held in some rooms. In any case, we saw several pentagrams drawn on the floor.
For those who dare, there are improvised ladders to get to the tower. Some say it is haunted in a corridor above. And you will hear voices and sounds.
There is also the well-known pool. On photos it always seems quite large. In reality it is a bit of a shock that it is not what it seems.
Until now I only saw photos of the front. And from the high chimneys.
I myself found the back to have something beautiful.
Judge for yourself in my attached photo. The view from behind reminds me of a postcard.
It is so unfortunate that if action is not taken quickly, this location will be doomed. Why are such beautiful buildings lost in our country?
At the end of our visit we looked back one more time. Closed our eyes and listened ...
Have we really heard the screams of tormented souls? Or was it our own fantasy?
Investigate yourself and find out if you also hear them.
Mysterious.

It is a great place to visit. The day I was there there was a lot of snow. With snow, the place is even more beautiful.
Despite all the vandalism, you can still take very nice photos.
If you are psychic it is also a beautiful place

I've visited this spot many times, but last time I went there, in July 2019, I was surprised and frustrated to discover that the place had been completely trashed.
It's million miles away from the sanatorium I first visited a few years ago.
There's literally nothing left, that's a shame.
Anyway, it's still a nice spot to take photos, the architecture of the building and the woods surrounding the place are really superb.

It's an impressive building which ( unfortunately ) is totally trashed. The surroundings of the building is great but inside is not much to see.
The rooms are almost the same throughout the whole building.
