Servus!

Germany have many beautiful and gigantic sanatoriums laying around. This one is one of my favorites next to Beelitz Heilstätten.
Grabowsee Heilstätte is situated in the forest and next to a beautiful lake. There are 30+ buildings. Fifteen of the buildings are marked as historical monuments. Most of them lay in a rectangle and are connected by amazing underground tunnels. The most significant building is the sanatoriums own (!) water tower made in beautiful red brick.
The land is about 34 hectare and there are many small barracks and even the ruins of a burnt down church.
In 1850 almost one third of the German population aged 15 to 60 years old had tuberculosis. The first patients were hospitalized here in 1896. In the year 1900 there were 200 beds here for men. This was a sanatorium for the “common man” ran by The Red Cross. During WWI soldiers with lung decease were treated here. There were also war prisoners here until 1918.
After WWI some of the buildings were sold (June 1:st 1920) due to economic difficulties. The first world war didn’t make its mark on this place. In the 1930s the hospitals capacity increased to 420.
During WWII it was first a SS war hospital and then overtaken by the Red Army (1945–1995). The place were too far away from everything to be bombed and there are few signs of the war here. When the Red Army left, they plundered the buildings of most things, even the banisters!
There are many beautiful staircases that many of us urbexers like. :) Make sure to inspect the beautiful patterns in the ceiling, I missed that part but have seen that others took great photos of it. And of course do not miss the grand piano on stage in the assembly hall!
The place is very well kept. The owner have let artists make installations that are lovely to see, especially the fantasy monsters and ghosts. There are also a special barrack filled with street art.
The area was abandoned for about 20 years after the wall fell but it is not abandoned anymore. Although I think it’s worth visiting anyways.
You can visit the area by calling the gardener and agree on a time. It will cost you about 10 Euro (based on the type of camera you have, mobile camera was only 10 EUR). Then you may stroll around as you please. No video cameras and drones allowed unfortunately.
The keeper of the place is a trained gardener and he is a very nice person, and he takes care of this place so please respect him and visit this place in a legal way. There are not many opportunities like this, and the place is more original than Beelitz for example. The owner hope to transform the area to a educational place for kids (read more about it on their webpage, address below).
I walked around here a whole day and was so happy afterwards. The road to the place is a beautiful and peaceful road through the forest. It’s also a great place to bring your bike. If you want to take great photos – this is the place.
What to bring:
Headlight
Snacks (!)
Mobile camera
Warning:
Decaying roof/floor, especially in the attic.
No banisters on many of the stairs.
As usual you visit this place on your own risk.
