This location began humbly as a small town elementary school in 1954. The school was originally built as a black equalization school; schools created to enforce “separate but equal” during segregation times. As integration moved forward, most of them closed their doors. This particular one was repurposed into a makeshift funeral home. Half of the building maintained the school features, while the larger parts were haphazardly transitioned into booming business. The motivation behind the new business was nothing beyond greed. The owner of the funeral home was a powerful politician, seeking money and feeling untouchable. After some time into its operation, legal troubles arose. Charges of tax evasion launched into a legal battle between Mr. K and the community. Eventually, the charges dissipated, largely attributed by Mr. K’s position of high power and corrupt nature. Locals describe him with feelings of dismay, some calling him a “crook”, “thief” and ranting about what he’s done to their small town community. After seeing no consequence for his heinous actions, he left the funeral home behind and opened a brand new and improved one. Once again, he was slammed by locals. There were claims that Mr. K left the ashes of the towns loved ones inside the closed doors. It was also said he left toxic, harmful chemicals laying around inside, along with black mold festering from water damages. Today, Mr. K operates his new funeral as if the first one never existed, and rots like garbage. Many locals hold resentment towards him. His corrupt ways ultimately contributed to the demise of this once beautiful and historical building. Inside, there is a chapel area for services and is the grandest part of the facility. Red pews, now dingy outline every isle. Crooked gold chandeliers hang above. On the stage area, there is a wood pulpit with a Bible still open, along with two pianos that once celebrated late loved ones lives. Every room has old funeral supplies, from makeup, razors, wigs, chemicals embalming tables to caskets, office supplies, and phamplets from the services of those passed. The walls exude a sad, eerie and unsettling feeling. It’s dark, damp and moldy, and a sense of anguish hangs in the dim air. Outside, a few out of commission hearses rot away in the long, unkempt grass.
