This detention centre for youth was originally built in 1961. It was first opened as a mental health facility - the Ontario Hospital, later becoming the Bluewater Centre for the Developmentally Handicapped in 1976. After a $10 million in reconstruction in 1985 it finally became what was the Bluewater Youth Centre until it closed in 2015 and has since been used by the Canadian Army as a training facility.

We visited this location kind of spur of the moment. We were on our way to go hike a waterfall - when we drove past a youth detention centre neither of us were familiar with. I googled it to find out the name of the centre which ended up leading me to an article about the Bluewater closing. We started talking about how cool it would be to go see. We decided right then and there to scrap our plan, drive the opposite direction and head the 3.5 or so hours there.

We had absolutely no idea if we could get it. We had absolutely no idea what the place looked like by now but figured why not try. Luckily (after parking forever away and hiking through some pretty thick woods for an hour...unnecessarily) we arrived and found an open gate, behind which open doors everywhere. We spent 2.5 hours exploring and photographing, enjoy.

The locals protect this property - there have been recent arrests due to trespassing. Enter at your own risk.
