This old radar station was part of a big communication network of the NATO.

The buildings are all empty and full of goat dung but the outside is amazing to explore.

We slept next to the area and woke up with a very beautiful view. Crazy place!

In the climate of the Cold War, a troposcatter station was built on the Dosso dei Galli, equipped with imposing mosaic parables about 30 meters high and capable of transmitting and receiving information and radar tracks in real time. The gigantic parables today seem the vestiges of an extraterrestrial civilization, dominate a desert and lunar landscape and are musical instruments of the wind, which in absolute silence constantly sweeps the top weaving melodies with steel structures. The N.A.T.O. base it remained in operation from 1969 to 1995: it was part of an electromagnetic belt of 49 stations located 300 km away from each other and structured to withstand the radio traffic of the ACE High System. The network guaranteed N.A.T.O. the possibility of encrypted communications and data in real time with the use of the Troposcatter signal, sent to the troposphere and collected by the various stations - a very reliable system even in adverse weather conditions. The network had its starting point in the Senia station in Norway, from where the North Atlantic Radio System connection with the Faroe islands started - from there the connection passed from Greenland with the Distant Early Warning Line network, then from Alaska and finally from Canada. In Canada, the White Alice Communications System took over to the United States.
