Emerging from a small town dispute, this school was built in 1999 and only operated for two short years. The conflict began when the city announced the high school would be closing and all residents would have to attend school in a nearby town. With a population under 400 and only 150 attendees at the high school, the town did not see the necessity nor have the funds to keep all the schools operating. It hardly had enough students to have a football team, but it was very successful, boasting highest test scores in the state, as well as a much loved historical staple among a tight knit community. People were angry to hear of the schools closures and unwilling to drive the long distances required to get to other schools. With conflict arising, a local church stepped up to meet the needs of unsettled townspeople. The charter school was built across the street from the church and opened its door to elementary and middle school aged children. Those who attended had to pay a fee to do so. Shortly after, the town decided to reopen the high school, but instead as an elementary school. Enrollment shifted from the pricey charter school back to the to the local elementary school. Sadly, with no students attending or paying, it closed its doors in 2001. Sitting vacant and purposeless, it soon became the hang out for bored local teens. It has been marred by graffiti, vandalism and a hefty amount of black mold. The town currently is at its lowest population ever, with only 347 still remaining. The church attendance has even dropped drastically, meaning there are few plans or people concerned about the building. What was originally a great idea, turned into a massive failure and will sadly never be able to be repurposed.
