Legal exploration from an old airfield built by the nazis in the 30s
Next to him was the location from the first concentration camp ever
Didn’t want to report it at first because that’s a bit like a museum but I saw he was already on the site soooooo
There are guided tours and that’s really interesting
You’ll need a reservation to enter there
The place was in part destroyed after the war but he stayed used since 2008
The 2 airfield’s roads are too short for the planes that we have now

Tempelhof was one of the oldest of Berlins three big airports (Tegel and Schönefeld being the others). It opened 1923 and was called The Mother of all Airports by the architect Norman Foster.

Discussions about closing the airport started already in 1995, but it took until 2008 before it closed down.

October 30th, 2008 at 23:58 the two last planes started at the same time from parallel runways 27 R and 27 L. The last call was "Delta Charlie Delta Lima Hotel, Auf Wiedersehen".

The main building at the airport was once one of the 20 largest buildings in the world. But it had the smallest duty free shop.

Both in 1978 and 1981 two planed belonging to LOT Polish Airlines was hijacked and forced to land at Tempelhof. Both hijackers were arrested after landing.

After the closure the airport was opened as a park for the Berliners. There were guided tours in the former terminal building.

I was there a hot day in June. It's very rare (for me at least) so see such a big open field. Also in the middle in the city. I saw an old railway but I can't find more information about it. Maybe it was used to get passengers and luggage to the aircrafts.

1909 Orville Wright flies one of the first motor driven airplanes in the area
1923 Tempelhof opened
1926 Lufthansa was founded here
1930s The Nazis planned to make the airport to one of Europe’s biggest airports
1945 Us Forces takes over the airport
1990 After the fall of the Berlin wall, the airport is open for comer ial flights
2008 Tempelhof closed down
2010 Opened as a park from sunrise to sunset
2015 The former airport was used as a refugee camp
2020 Brandenburg Airport opened October 31st
