Visit date June 24 2014 at 15 hr Visit duration < 1 hour
November 24th 1973 a DC3 Dakota from the US Navy made an emergency landing 150km from Reykjavik , on the beach of Solheimasandur , near Vik
Because it was stranded on a remote beach the US Army decided not to salvage the plane , they did recover important parts like the engines and cargo , but left the fuselage on the beach
The plane is still there , and has become a real tourist attraction on Iceland
It's located about 3km from the main road , only accessable for Four wheel drive cars
In 2014 , when I visited the wreck you could drive to the location , which I did with my Dacia Duster4x4 .You had to drive through a small creek and up a rought slope , I just followed an Iceland tourist guide in his Landrover
However , today there are no longer veciles allowed ,so any visit will be on foot
I edited most of the photos ( i hope you like them) , I signed my own photos , the other were taken by my wife Marianne
