Eindelijk eens deze locatie gedaan. Net op hoorde ik omdat rechts nu is opgeruimd.
We zijn rechts begonnen en daarna links. Toen we in links bijna klaar waren , kwamen er 3 mannen van toezicht. Waren wel vriendelijk maar we moesten wel vetrekken. Gelukkig waren we al klaar met foto's maken.

We parked in the main parking lot and just walked towards the Lost Place. Since the location is located on an active hospital site, there were a lot of people. We turned at an opportune moment and got to the location. The entrance to the first building is very easy. The building is full of furniture, children's clothes and toys. On the upper floor it becomes interesting, however, very much has been stagend and prepated by other Urbexers.

Shutter Island, eine Psychiatrie irgendwo in Belgien. Ihr bekanntestes und eindrucksvollstes Wahrzeichen ist wohl der 50 Meter hohe Wasserturm, der einen wahrhaftig überwältigt. Da es 1925 einen gewaltigen Mangel an Plätzen für psychisch kranke Menschen nicht nur in der Umgebung, sondern auch in ganz Belgien gab, kam man auf die geniale Idee, diese riesige Psychiatrie in die Realität umzusetzen. 1928 wurden die ersten Pläne dafür geschmieden und die Gemeinde gab ihr Einverständnis für die Errichtung. Im Mai 1931 dann, wurde der Bau für die Psychiatrie schlussendlich in die Tat umgesetzt. So wurden 1932 einige der ersten Gebäude fertig gestellt und die Patienten konnten aufgenommen und behandelt werden. Über die Jahre hinweg wurde das Gelände immer wieder vergrößert und erweitert, sodass man heute vor einem beeindruckenden und riesigen Komplex von Gebäuden, für die Behandlung und Heilung von Menschen, mit psychischen Krankheiten steht.
Nachdem die Psychiatrie 1932 eröffnet war, dauerte es nicht lange, bis einige der Patienten schon untergebracht wurden. Jedoch war der Anflug an Patienten so enorm, dass man gezwungen war, die ganze Anstallt sowohl zu vergrößern, als auch zu erweitern. Über die Jahre hinweg wurden immer weitere Erneuerungen vorgenommen. So kam es dann, das jedes Gebäude für einen bestimmten Zweck zur Verfügung stand und diesen auch erfüllte. Es gab beispielsweise mehrere Gebäude wo nur männliche Patienten untergebracht waren, währenddessen auf der anderen Seite des Geländes, nur weibliche Patienten in einigen Gebäude untergebracht waren. Außerdem gab es eigene Gebäude für Kinder, sowie Schulgebäude, Sportgebäude und sogar Gebäude, die nur zum Aufenthalt bzw. zur Unterhaltung dienten. Im laufe der Jahre kamen immer wieder neue Gesetze, Regelungen und Sicherheitshinweise auf die Psychiatrie hinzu, die man gezwungen war einzuhalten. Da der Zahn der Zeit ja bekanntlich überall nagt, war es nur klar, dass einige der ersten Gebäude diesen Sicherheitsbestimmungen nicht mehr stand hielten, aber anstatt diese zu renovieren und in schuss zu bringen, war es wohl einfacher und kostengünstiger einfach weitere neue Gebäude errichten zu lassen und die alten als Abstellräume ihrem Schicksal zu überlassen.
Tatsächlich befinden sich auf dem Gelände dieser Psychiatrie zwei ungenutzte, beziehungsweise leerstehende Gebäude. Wie man schon vermuten kann, sind es mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit, die zwei erstgebautesten und somit ältesten Gebäude dieser Anlage. Das wird einem ebenfalls noch einmal bewusst, wenn man sich die Anordnung der Gebäude genauer betrachtet, denn hier fällt einem direkt ins Auge, dass diese beiden leerstehenden Objekte, sich direkt am Anfang, genauer gesagt am Eingang der Psychiatrie befinden. Geografisch gesehen, stehen diese somit direkt neben dem Wasserturm, das eine davon liegt rechts (östlich) daneben, und das andere ist links (westlich) nebendran gelegen, aber auf jeden Fall die zwei ersten beiden Gebäude, die damals auf der Anlage gebaut wurden. Über eine lange Zeit hinweg, dienten Sie wohl unterschiedlichsten Zwecks und hatten jeweils einen anderen, oder neuen Nutzen bekommen, bis zu guter letzt, die drei altbekannten V's, den Gebäude den Rest gaben. Erst Vergessen, daraufhin Verfallenen und schlussendlich Verloren.
Allem Anschein nach wurde wohl das ungenutzte Gebäude, welches sich rechts des Wasserturms befindet, in seinen letzten Jahren als Kinderpsychiatrie genutzt. Es befinden sich zahlreiche Kuscheltiere und Plüschtiere in einigen der Zimmer, wobei mit Sicherheit, bei gewissen davon, hier schon eine innere Art von Unwohlsein, bei dem einen oder anderen ausgelöst wird. Außerdem findet man in so gut wie jeder noch einigermaßen nutzbaren Kiste, eine Menge an Spielzeug, aber auch hier, sind ein Haufen fragwürdiges Zeugs mit dabei. Im unteren Bereich befindet sich noch ein großer Saal, der vermutlich als Aufenthaltsort, beziehungsweise Spielsaal genutzt wurde. Im oberen Stockwerk waren die Schlafsäle der Kinder, die in typischen kleinen und kalt wirkenden Stahlbetten, ihre Nächte verbringen mussten. Hier und da erblickt man in manchen Ecken mal eine Gehhilfe, oder gar einen Rollstuhl. Am schlimmsten jedoch, sind mit großer Sicherheit die Bade und Waschzimmer und nicht zu vergessen, die Toiletten. Dicht an dicht gedrängt, mussten sich die damaligen Minderjährigen Patienten waschen, ohne auch nur die kleinste Weise von Privatsphäre zu haben. Ebenso befindet sich eine Art kleine Kantine und Kiosk mit Theater im oberen Flurgang. Jedoch der interessanteste Raum des ersten Gebäudes, ist und war mit großer Wahrscheinlich der Unterrichtssaal. Es gab einen kleinen Einblick darauf, wie wohl das tägliche Wochenleben der Kinder aussah und wie man sieht, sind selbst heute noch, die Schulbänke von lernwilligen Schülern in Gebrauch.

The notoriously spooky "Shutter Island".

I have been here before but then I didn't know that there were two separate buildings. Therefore, this time I started in the building that I skipped the first time.

By the time we went outside it was dark. That is exactly what we needed on a horror location like this. In the dark we entered the second building. That's how TubbieOnTheRoad and I were able to create some creepy nasty pictures here.

It is noticeable that windows here are regularly opened and closed and that the objects left behind change place regularly. In the end, everything is staged here. And there's even an entire room that was a big mess during my first visit. Now it was neatly arranged again.

Anyway, this remains a great place to take photos. But a time capsule, frozen in time, it certainly is not.

Tief in Belgien, auf dem großen Gelände einer aktiven Psychiatrie, befinden sich zwei ungepflegte Gebäude. Diese werden schon seit vielen Jahren nicht mehr genutzt.Es war eine schaurig Atmosphäre.Die Einrichtung für mehr als 800 Patienten wurde in den 1930ern offiziell eröffnet!

Après une première visite des lieux il y a près de cinq ans, mes pas me ramènent dans ces pavillons abandonnés d'un hôpital psychiatrique encore en activité... C'est ici le paradis de la mise en scène : des poupées mutilées exposées dans des positions sensées provoquer l'effroi, des crucifix en pagaille, des projections de sang artificiel sur les murs, des chaussures orthopédiques ou des chaises roulantes soigneusement positionnées pour évoquer une présence et susciter la chair de poule. Tout mon travail dans ce lieu est de tenter de démonter l'évidence, de garder le climat pesant tout en évacuant les éléments trop flagrants. Je m'amuse tout de même à prendre en photo quelques pièces où la disposition des objets prête à rire tant elle évoque des films d'horreur bon marché...

This is a well known place amongst all urbexers.

I love the overgrown buildings, and how you enter through the windows, passing by a broken old wheelchair alone at the entrance. Once you enter the eerie and partially burnt psychiatry, there are a lot of scenes made where you can take a lot of beautiful and creepy pictures.

The sights of the broken chairs, upside down crosses, and so on... Just remind me of Outlast the game, really freaky hahaha.

On one of the first sunny days in Belgium we explored this abandoned sections of a still operative mental institution. Both sections were packed with a lot of stuff on the main floor and had staged rooms on the first floor. instead of vandalism, there were clear signs of creative people that visited this location and staged some dark scenes wich are awesome to for photography...

Ik was hier zelf een tijdje geleden en wauw wat was het een mooie locatie ik was er eerder nog een keer geweest maar ik wist niet dat er nog een gebouw was dus ben gwn lekker nog een keertje terug gegaan als je op het terein loopt voelt het toch wel een beetje raar er hangt een rare sfeer mischien ook omdat er mensen zijn die mentalen problemen hebben (daar is niets mis mee) het tweede gebouw is iets minder bekent het licht ook helemaal aan de andere kant van het terein maar dat houden mij niet tegen om er naar toe te gaan ik had foto’s gezien en dacht van wauw wat een mooie locatie maar waarom zijn de gebouwen hier toe? Zijn ze te oud is er iets gebeurt .... die vragen stelde ik mij wel meermaas maar goed zeker een aanrader!

Vantevoren al mooie foto's over deze locatie gezien!
Het gebouw ligt nog op het terrein wat nog in gebruik is, als je weet waar je moet zoeken is het wel goed te vinden. Je ziet wel dat hier veel in scène is gezet, maar dat maakt het zeker niet minder leuk! Ondanks dat er brand is geweest kan je hier nog mooie foto's maken!

Shutter Island 2,

Na het eerste gebouw, ontdekt dat er ook een 2de gebouw was. Deze was ook wel de moeite, enkele mooie plekjes om foto's te maken. Maar mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar Shutter Island 1, ondanks de brand die er is geweest. Je moet wel opletten bij het betreden van de gebouwen, rondom deze gebouwen liggen nog allemaal nieuwe gebouwen die wel nog in gebruik zijn.

Toffe locatie, makkelijk te vinden als je weet waar je moet zoeken en je kunt er bijna voor de deur parkeren. Genoeg te zien en te fotograferen. Jammer dar er ook hier weer mensen zijn geweest die het nodig vinden zaken te slopen. Wel is er veel in scene gezet maar dat mag de pret niet drukken zolang er niet kapot gemaakt wordt. Lekker luguber sfeertje in de foto's weten te krijgen dus ik heb een topmiddag gehad.

We visited Shutter Island around 8’o clock in the evening, it was already dark and that made the place look extra creepy. We went through the cornfields (to make sure we didn’t get busted). We didn’t see any guards, just some patients wandering around. Very very nice place to take pictures! What an exciting trip.

Al enkele prachtige foto’s van deze locatie op voorhand gezien. Natuurlijk was ook die film met deze titel bekend en dus wilde ik er graag eens heen. Het is nog een actieve psychiatrische instelling en we werden al direct aangesproken dat we geen foto’s mochten maken op het terrein (we liepen ook ietwat te opvallend rond met cameratas en statief). Via het bos toch bij het eerste gebouw aangekomen. Na zo’n 2 uur weer over het terrein gelopen om bij het tweede gebouw te belanden. Gelukkig niet meer aangesproken, alleen nog enkele bewoners tegengekomen. Maar wat een vette locatie. En heel divers wat je allemaal tegenkomt. De foto’s spreken voor zich.

Already seen some beautiful photos of this location in advance. Of course that movie with this title was also known and so I wanted to go there. It is still an active psychiatric institution and we were immediately approached that we were not allowed to take photos on the site (we also walked around a bit too conspicuously with camera bag and tripod). We arrived at the first building through the forest. After about 2 hours walked across the site again to end up at the second building. Fortunately no longer addressed, only a few residents encountered. But what a cool location. And very diverse what you will encounter. The pictures speak for themselves.

Deze locatie is was een goeie locatie om foto’s te maken.
Er ligt wel veel rommel maar tussen de rommel door heb ik toch een aantal mooie foto’s kunnen maken. De bekende rolstoel stond toen nog op de bovenste verdieping samen met het krijtbord waar op staat “shutter island”.

De locatie was makkelijk te betreden maar de weg ernaar toe zien veel mensen je wandelen. Ik heb zelfs gehoord dat er een aantal mensen gepakt waren door de politie, maar dat was tijdens mijn bezoek niet van toepassing.

Update 2020:
De locatie is volledig terug dichtgemaakt, ik ben er dan ook niet meer binnen geraakt. De bekende rolstoel staat ook niet meer binnen maar buiten voor de deur.

Als iemand terug een ingang vindt, laat maar iets weten!

Première visite en 2018, je n'ai visité qu'un bâtiment. C'était déjà assez grand et intéressant même si c'est très en désordre à l'intérieur. Deux bâtiments sont abandonnés en réalité, mais tout le reste du site est encore en activité. Il y a des résidents qui se baladent un peu partout quand il fait beau, il vaut peut être mieux y aller quand la météo est moins bonne. J'ai été deux fois. Une fois je n'avais vu qu'un bâtiment, la deuxième fois, début 2020, j'ai fait les deux. Pour entrer dans les bâtiments, c'est hyper facile. Celui que j'avais déjà visité a changé, des squatteurs qui pratiquaient des activités bizarres avaient modifié l'aménagement d'une pièce qui était belle autrefois. A part ça, ça n'a pas trop changé. Pour les intéressés, j'ai fait un article avec l'histoire de ce lieu.

Bij binnenkomst op het terrein genoeg gezien door bezoekers van de openbare plekken. Toch een poging gewaagd binnen te komen en nadat er een andere urbexer uit het raam hing om te vertellen waar we naar binnen konden toch nog 2 uur rustig doorgebracht en wat plaatjes kunnen schieten. Wel veel gestaged maar was nog wel vermakelijk om te zien.

Ein sehr bekannter Ort unter Urbexern und Fotografen - und das merkt man auch. Wenn man sich verschiedene Fotos anschaut sieht es immer wieder anders aus, gefühlt jeder Zweite dekoriert dort um. Es gibt trotzdem einige schöne Motive. Lasst euch nicht erwischen!

Op een zondag gingen we Shutter Island bezoeken, na veel opzoek werk en foto's gezien te hebben had ik wel hoge verwachtingen... helaas binnen was het wel minder. Er stond nog veel HEEL veel, van speelgoed tot kleding. Meubels waren er ook nog genoeg aanwezig, vooral opeen gestapeld. Dat was wel spijtig. Het is een redelijk gekende locatie onder de urbexer en dat is ook wel te zien. Op sommige plekken moest je echt zien dat je je voet niet brak!
We zijn toen naar boven gegaan, en DE bekende rolstoel tegen gekomenen en DE gekende kamer in goed staat was even kippenvel moment. Dan heb je wel een kleine fierheid deze te kunnen fotograferen, nu ik spreek vooral voor mezelf maar zie de foto regelmatig passeren, dus denk wel dat iedereen deze locatie graag eens gedaan wilt hebben voor een van deze redenen. De boven was eigenlijk nog in redelijk goede staat, de bar, tientallen borden nog in de kasten stoelen aan het kinderpodium was heel mooi om naar te kijken. Ik denk wel dat er een xmos heeft plaats gevonden omdat er een bord stond maar was weinig van te zien.
We zijn 2 jongens tegen gekomen en toen ze ons passeerde hoorde ik ze zeggen: 't is hier niet echt de moeite om foto's te komen maken en ze vertrokken. Nu zag ik toch dat ze mooie foto's gemaakt hebben; dus go for it. Ik ben blij deze locatie gedaan te hebben en ik hoop jullie ook!

Shutter Island, who hasn't heard about this location. i had high hopes on this one but once inside you can tell that there have been a lot of people before you, but it still has some nice spots and i can see how this was once a beautiful asylum.
