In this area the production of cane sugar has been important for centuries. There are still sugar factories in the area, others have been converted into luxury hotels, but this one was abandoned a long time ago. Cane sugar is used to produce rum so of course these factories were very important for the islands in the Caribbean.

While the area around it has changes a lot, this old building lays in ruins.

According to Wikipedia cane sugar was an ancient crop of the Austronesian and Papuan people. It was in the 18th century plantations of sugarcanes were introduced in the Caribbean. With that many islands needed more workers for the plantations and factories. Some moved there willingly but many was forced to move to the islands as slaves. Close to this factory there is a memorial museum about the slave trade in the Caribbean.

In the photos you see the pink house that almost looks like a boat, that is supposed to be a factory building. Although several years after my trip I wonder if this isn’t an office building for the factory, because it doesn’t look industrial. Around the factory there are still small residential houses, many of them abandoned as well. The rest of the area has been turned into a parking lot.
