Old scrapyard turned into art installation

Two brothers owned this car scrapyard started in the 1940s, after WWII. With more than 1 000 cars it is the biggest car junkyard in Northern Europe.

Here cars were repaired, picked apart for spare parts and demolished. The brothers mostly sold spare parts to Norwegian customers. Norway was poor after the war and spare parts were really hard to get there.

The junkyard was opened until the 1980s. Both brothers lived in two houses on the lot, the houses are still there today.

To get here you need to drive about 25 kilometres on small old gravel roads until you come up to a sign that says: “This is the end of the public road”. The junkyard lays on the border to Norway. Most of the cars are Swedish cars from the 1940s until the 1960s.

The brothers have now moved but they left a sign on one of their houses: “If you wanna take photos that’s fine. But do not steal or pick parts from the cars. If you wanna buy something contact us on this number.”

Deep in the forest just across the Norwegian border is this immens car graveyard
The cars there were collected by two brothers over a period of 40 years . Apparentely in 1974 Sweden introduced a technical inspection for vehicles, so in that period a lot of older cars were sold for scrap metal and added to the collection
The place has become a tourist attraction with visitors from around Europe
One of the brothers still lives in the nearby house , but doesn't mind vsitors , although he warns thieves and trespassers to the abandoned cottage on the site
Fairly so !
Not all photos are mine , some were taken by Marianne, my wife
