I have revisited this place time and time again because there’s so much to see and the architecture is breathtaking. The few personal effects left behind are ancient; a hospital bed, old crutches, the overturned furniture and collection of jars in one of the tunnels. Also, a 1950’s style rusted washing machine.

I believe it shut down in ‘80’s after looking at an old “tasks” sheet, but the internet states it was closed in ‘75. That may have been the original school that was deemed unfit. Thus they created a new one, (this one), which had dorm style rooms to house the inmates. Each dorm held roughly thirty boys. They were over watched by a married couple since most of them were orphaned and they needed a positive influence. The boys had mandatory church and they were assigned duties on the farm to acclimate them to living by a strict regiment with a sense of diligence. By 21, they were released into the world as god-loving, upstanding, civilians.

The three large buildings had not only dorms but rooms for activities. A suspicious little chapel in the sub-basement still lives today; it sits unsteadily on rickety hardwoods that have spaces between them. The three adjoining structures possess an appearance of antiquity in the existing mill work, fixtures (such as old door hinges), arched ceilings in the tunnels, etc.

All of the lockers, tiles, and paint are mostly turquoise and pink. There’s amateur graffiti everywhere, (proof that the urbex hotspot has blown up amongst the younger crowd). In fact, on my most recent explore there, doors in the sub basement with latches and hinges reflective of 1800’s construction, were tagged by a lovely artist named “Tina.” Fuck Tina. You don’t disgrace construction work of the 1800’s.

Anyway, I’ve been here a couple times alone because the thrill of walking through underground tunnels by myself cannot be beat. I have also brought my boyfriend who came with me reluctantly. My new/old hobby still never loses it’s excitement for me....and at the rate I’m going, I’m sure it never will.
