The TNT bunkers situated in the Mcclintock Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia. There are rows of old World War 2 era bunkers or igloos. There is believed to be 100 bunkers in total at this location. This TNT are is or was known as the West Virginia Ordinance Works. It is also reported to be the home of the legendary cryptid know as the Mothman. These bunkers were constructed to look like igloos and placed strategically throughout the area. Vegetation and nature would grow over and around these igloos concealing them from the air in the event of an air attack. Stored inside these bunkers was TNT and DNT which was used to make munitions for World War 2.
There was also a factory on site where the TNT and DNT was made before storage. There are very little left of the factory or the acid tanks. These acid tanks where raised off the ground and held chemicals for the process. This section of the area is still a no trespassing area and permission is needed.
I have been here many times and am fascinated by the history. My goal is to find all 100 bunkers at present time i am at 50 bunkers. This locations is a super fund site. For those who do not know what super fund sites are they are highly contaminated locations. 500,00 pounds of TNT were produced here each day. This site was closed in 1945, but in 2010 one of the bunkers exploded with contained 20,00 pound of unstable product left over.
I have found the exploded bunker but not the one that is partially under water. There is a lot of water crossings that are easy to cross and others that are not easy to cross. Hiking is a defiant must when going here there is so much area to cover is you want to find all the bunkers if not an hour will work just as well. Not all of the bunkers are easily spotted from the paths that exist and so are so overgrown its crazy. I have walked by a couple and didn't even realize they where there. The main bunkers that are the easiest to find are open and have lots of graffiti. I believe it is worth my time and effort to lock for them all. In some locations you can find buried metal barrels and water that is a reddish orange color possible contamination still exits. Not all the bunkers are opened to enter so I am unsure if they may have TNT still in storage. The West Virginia DNR may use some for storage as I have found evidence that this is true. This whole area as well as the near by town has so much history and I am a history geek. They have every thing here from cryptids, a haunted hotel, to an old fort.
