Östra Silvberg gruva (East Silver mountain mine) is one of Sweden’s oldest mines. It was a sulphide ore (gold and silver) mine that have been mined since the 1300th century. It was abandoned in the 1930’s.
The area has a few holes that goes over 200 meters under the surfaces. The holes are waterfilled and popular among divers. In 2015 a diving robot was sent down in the biggest hole and they found around 20 old stolen cars (probably insurance fraud), one boat, one motorcycle and suspicious barrels that might contain chemicals.
People go swimming here in the summertime but the colour of the mine on water indicates contaminants in the water. The water was ice cold and I made sure not to drink any.
